Lake Muskoka, August 29th and 30th 2009 ... on what is arguably one of the most beautiful bodies of water in Ontario, over 120 OBFN members competed for a position in the 2010 Hank Gibson Provincial Qualifier in Gravenhurst.  These Bassmaster club members came from across the province and had all qualified via their respective club tournaments. They were now all competing to become part of the prestigious Team Ontario – made up of the top 12 place finishers. This all important step on the Road to the Bassmaster Classic is truly the pinnacle of grassroots competitive fishing in Ontario.

Weather was less than ideal on day one with a cold damp wind and rain that started shortly after blast-off. Lake Muskoka can be stingy at the best of times and tough conditions didn’t help but after two days, as always, fish were found and the cream rose to the top. Those who earned a position on “The Team” worked hard and figured out those stubborn bass. Many were names that we have seen before but as is always the case, some qualified for the first time as well. In the end, another great team was chosen to represent Canada at the Eastern Divisional’s in the US.

Top spot went to first time qualifier John Simiana of Petawawa Bassmasters with 28.24 pounds of both Smallmouth and Largemouth, including big fish on day one, a 5.52 pound largemouth. Close behind was Brian Geisel of K-W Cambridge Bassmasters with 27.00 pounds and Craig Butler of York Bassmasters with 24.64 pounds. Back on the team for the forth time is Dave Rochette of the Muskoka Bassmasters. Back to back qualifiers included Rob Hyatt of North Bay, Scott Huffman of St Catherines, Dave Johnson of York, Gary Manshott of  Lindsay Bassmasters, and the team alternate last year - Greg Roth who led the tournament after day one. Rounding out the team are Garnet Armitage of Port Perry, Phil Curtis of Muskoka, Craig Denham of Lindsay Bassmasters and Ben Sabourin of North Bay

About The Fishing:
Lake Muskoka can is a clear and deep body of water in the heart of Canadian Shield country. Unlike some shield lakes with little or no aquatic vegetation, there is some in this large picturesque lake. “Sometimes the weeds hold bass and at other times they don’t. Smallmouth bass often just roam the main lake looking for smelt and pelagic baitfish and can therefore be difficult to find at times. Largemouth are not nearly as plentiful but they can be big, and finding a couple Hawgs can be the ticket to winning any tournament on this lake”, explained Muskoka Bassmaster president Mike Walsh.  Although the lake was frustrating for many anglers the stories of lost fish were plentiful. Finding fish wasn’t the problem for those who did well but keeping them on was the key.... many lost big fish at the boat – and one even lost a critically nice bass long after it was already in the livewell!

Heartbreaking Loss:
Frank Ramsay of the Ottawa Bassmasters and multi Team Ontario member is one of the most respected anglers within the OBFN. At the Muskoka Qualifier he pre fished extensively and worked long days to find quality fish. He can attest to just how feisty Muskoka smallies are.

Well the incident just capped off my day 2 fishing.  I started the morning losing three good fish, which would have helped me climb up the 2009 OBFN Provincial Qualifier Leader board, knowing the final results now. I guess I was pretty drained (as were most anglers competing) with the day’s activities and the weekend as a whole, especially with the weather and fishing conditions we had to contend with.

When I arrived at the weigh-in site on Day 2, I was pretty tired (mentally) and I normally drain out some of the water in the live wells to make it easier to lip the fish and put into the bag.  But this time we decided to use my live well net.  So after bagging Mike's (Bryczka - Hamilton BM's) fish, it was time for mine. In my wisdom, I decided to bag my fish using the net and not like Mike, lipping them in the live well net, and then putting them into the bag.  So, on my first fish (2 1/2 lbs) I lifted the net with the fish in it and proceed to the weigh in bag.  As I was bringing the net to the bag, the net closed the top of the bag, and the fish flipped out of the net.  It landed on the rear deck and I had it between my feet.  I thought all was well until I reached down to lip the fish, and with a flip of the tail the fish jumped between my legs and by the time I turned around to grab it, it was on its way to freedom over the side of the boat.

After much thinking (it does play on your mind after experiencing it..) all I had to do was flip it back into the live well.  I guess I was more mentally drained then I thought. So this incident resulted in me finishing 14th verses 9th in the overall standings for the 2009 OBFN Provincial Qualifier.  This incident is not as bad as the incident that happened to Jim Bitters at the 1989 Bassmaster Classic. While measuring his 5th fish on his front deck, it flipped and jumped back into the water, which resulted in Jim losing the event by 2 ounces (only weighed in 4 fish) to Hank Parker.  But it still hurts.
So I want to wish all 2010 Team Ontario members all the success at Candlewood next September, and remember to enjoy the experience in pursuit of qualifying for the 2010 Bass Federation Champion and ultimately qualifying for a berth in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic.  Because once you have experienced this once, it will give you even more desire to return again.

In spite of the weather there were very few incidents or accidents with the exception of Kal Vaisanen of the Barrie Bassmasters who went for a unscheduled swim when a wave hit the boat while Kal was turning around on the front of the deck. Kal got back in the boat, changed rain suits and kept right on fishing the rest of the day. When asked what happened, Kal said he couldn’t keep the smallies on his jerk bait. Clearly the most import issue of the day for him was making the team.

The bait of choice for the winners was a combination of shallow running jerk baits, surface baits, and Senko’s. The average two day bag size was a mere 8.14 pounds with biggest single day weight going to Greg Roth at 16.28 pounds.

Team Ontario 2010 will move on to the Eastern Divisionals on Candlewood Lake in Connecticut next year where a contender from each state or province will move on to the Federation Nation Championships.  From there the top placing angler from each of the six divisions will qualify to compete against the pros in the World Championships of bass fishing – the Bassmaster Classic.

Thanks to the many volunteers and especially the Muskoka Bassmasters led by president Mike Walsh for another excellent job. As usual staff from Lures and Tours was there taking photos and posting them onto their site for anglers at www.luresandtours.com OBFN Executive members George Buetter, Leonard Eng, Fraser Muir, John Whyte and President, Ken Hamilton all worked hard to ensure another successful qualifier. Tournament director Bill Major ran a smooth and efficient weigh-in and special thanks goes out to Andy Pallotta who was there to assist and the CSFL for the use of their equipment.

Good luck in Candlewood.
